KEVIN CHALK: Hi, I am Kevin Chalk with Schwab Advisor Services, where we work with some of the most successful and fastest-growing advisory firms, talking with leaders about the complexities of growing their business and creating enduring enterprises.
Through our work, we’ve learned there’s one thing that separates top-performing firms from all others. In fact, one of Schwab’s Guiding Principles states that your people are your most important asset, and protecting that asset requires investing in, and developing your people to become better, more intentional leaders, and to ensure a firm’s sustainability. That’s why I’m excited to share Schwab’s RIA Manager Advancement Program, or RIA MAP, a virtual program created for high-performing mid-level managers, people leaders, or individual contributors on the path to managing people with a desire for formalized training to learn the skills needed to be a successful manager.
As you’ve excelled in your career, we want to help you continue your positive trajectory. Transitioning into and maintaining a managerial role can be exciting and rewarding, but it also can be challenging. Without effective training, managers are left trying to navigate all the conflicting interests, dynamics, and needs that are at the heart of management. This four-and-a-half-month program is designed specifically for the RIA industry and blends the deep experience of Charles Schwab with invaluable insights from RIA leaders, comprehensive assessments, practical lessons, tools, and resources.
The curriculum requires about two hours per week of the participant’s time, and includes virtual workshops, access to content via an on-demand platform, peer-to-peer interactions, and coaching from our firm sponsor. Throughout this program, we’ll walk participants through a guided framework to help them formulate insights and opportunities specific to their unique situation.
The first module is about managing yourself. Those who become effective managers learn to see themselves, their work, and even their professional relationships differently. Participants learn about the different responsibilities they have as a manager, delving into understanding their strengths and emotional intelligence, how others perceive them, honing their manager brand, while navigating their role day-to-day.
In the next module, participants learn how to effectively manage their people based on performance and potential, adjusting their approach to fit the unique talent of each individual they manage. They will explore navigating difficult conversations and providing meaningful feedback, creating an environment of trust, and the power of performance reviews to help drive employee growth.
In the manage your processes module, participants will examine the importance of process, and build consistent, repeatable ways of working, all while becoming more efficient and effective along the way. Additionally, they’ll learn how to identify pain points, attributes of a strong process, and how to collaborate to strengthen processes.
Finally, in the manage your team module, participants will gain insights into what they need from their team to achieve the business goals they’re expected to deliver, and potential pitfalls that could get in the way. Focus areas include learning how to mitigate weaknesses that are common within team dynamics, leveraging strengths to enhance the overall team performance, and exploring what their people need to create an engaging and productive environment.
At their program’s conclusion, each participant will walk away as a stronger, more confident manager, with the necessary skills to be a successful leader, while also contributing individually within their role.
