The dream of independence and the corporate reality
For Ralph Courage, financial services have always been about people—their hopes, worries, and dreams. It's never been just numbers on a statement.
He spent years in the brokerage world building client relationships that meant everything to him, and he always assumed those relationships would one day become the foundation of his own firm. A place where he could give honest advice, make his own decisions, and do right by the people who trusted him.
Then the industry shifted, stripping away many of the parts Ralph loved most. When a large bank acquired his firm, the culture changed almost overnight. There was upheaval, new faces, and a way of doing business he no longer recognized. The idea of building a firm centered entirely around his clients began to feel out of reach. Instead of focusing on clients and their goals, Ralph felt pressure to chase numbers and serve corporate interests he didn't believe in.
"I felt like my dream of owning a firm was fading," Ralph says. The idea of running his own practice and making decisions solely for his clients began to feel increasingly distant.
Ralph realized that staying put was the easy choice—but it wasn't the courageous one.
New energy and a shared vision
Jeff Miller, a long-time family friend who had recently joined Ralph's team, had been watching the same shifts unfold—and imagining similar possibilities for freedom and client focus.
Ralph saw in Jeff someone who shared his values, his commitment to service, and his desire to make a lasting difference. Teaming up gave Ralph the push he needed to move forward. Together, they began to picture a future in which Jeff would one day carry on Ralph's legacy, ensuring clients would be cared for long after Ralph retired.
Their partnership was grounded in a simple belief: Leadership begins with helping others.
Choosing the path of independence
With their combined experience, Ralph and Jeff chose to leave the broker-dealer model. They weighed their options, searching for the freedom and flexibility they believed their clients, and their firm, deserved. Becoming an independent Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) firm was the obvious choice.
As RIAs, the two advisors finally felt free. For the first time, they could serve clients on their own terms—without pushing products for commissions or bending to sales quotas. The old conflicts disappeared, and clients noticed the difference right away. Many embraced the move, reinforcing that Ralph and Jeff had made the right call. "It was liberating—for us and, most of all, our clients," Ralph says. They could shape their own firm the way they had always imagined—built on trust, service, and the kind of relationships that mattered most.
Why Courage and Miller chose Schwab
With the broker dealer behind them, the next question was how to build the firm right, and they had ideas about what they couldn't do without:
- A seamless move for clients and their accounts
- Access to compliance insights
- Flexible, easy-to-integrate technology
- Industry insights and connections through events like IMPACT®
Navigating complexity with the right ally
Going independent was thrilling, but it almost felt like leaping into unfamiliar territory. Ralph and Jeff were no longer just advisors. They were entrepreneurs, responsible for finding office space, building a brand, and figuring out how best to stay connected with clients.
Every decision—from technology to operations to outside partners—came back to one question: What's best for our clients? They knew they needed a custodian who would support those decisions.
They chose Schwab, whose experience working with thousands of independent firms made them confident they were making the right decision.
"We knew we were taking a risk," Ralph says. "Schwab helped us see around the corner, preparing us for what lay ahead. Their support meant that our clients never had to experience confusion or worry. They helped us deliver a seamless experience in a moment that could easily have felt overwhelming."
For Jeff, the decision came down to technology. Not a collection of separate tools but an integrated platform that could grow with the firm, combining Schwab's own solutions with leading third-party providers.
"We're able to change our focus to the goals and desires of our clients. It really puts them at the forefront."
Standing firm through the storm
Their new approach was tested almost immediately. Only weeks after launching their firm, the 2008 financial crisis sent markets sharply lower. While many firms were slowed by layers of corporate approval, Ralph and Jeff had the flexibility to act.
"We had no choice," Ralph recalls. "We had to navigate. We had to survive."
Independence let the pair respond quickly, something they couldn't have done in their previous corporate roles. Instead of waiting for instructions from distant leadership, they called their clients and made decisions in real time based on those relationships.
It also helped knowing they weren't alone. At a moment when many other institutions were faltering, Schwab gave them solid ground. Whatever came next, they knew their clients' assets had a strong and reliable home.
"It gives you confidence," Ralph says. "No matter what gets thrown your way, you feel like there are people out there that will do their best to work together."
Resilience and the future
Years later, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a different kind of disruption—but by then, Ralph and Jeff knew exactly what independence was worth. Once again, their structure let them move quickly and keep serving clients, with digital tools and virtual platforms to stay connected when it mattered most.
"Schwab's support has been steadfast," Jeff says, his trust evident.
Today, Jeff turns to Schwab not only for resources and support but for reassurance and a sense of connection in a profession where advocacy can make a meaningful difference. He values Schwab's commitment to independent advisors—the way they advocate for the community and ensure all voices are heard.
"Your values give you balance as you look to the future," Ralph says, "because you're not going to change them."
For Ralph and Jeff, independence was never just about running their own firm. It was about living out the values that led them there in the first place. Owning their own firm also rooted them more deeply in the communities they serve.
Giving back is one way they put those values into practice. One of the clearest examples is the Courage Miller Challenge Course at Old Dominion University—an outdoor ropes course used for leadership and team-building programs. Since its opening, the course has welcomed more than 77 groups and 2,200 students. It reflects the same values—leadership, teamwork, and helping others—that inspired Ralph and Jeff to go out on their own.
"You can only imagine how wonderful it makes us feel," Ralph says. By staying true to their values, offering honest guidance, and leading through service, Ralph and Jeff have built a business and a life rooted in purpose. Their legacy proves that in this industry, the most rewarding investment is always in people.
Independence allows Courage and Miller not only to be more involved with their clients but also to play a bigger role locally. "When you own a business, you're part of the community," Courage explains. "It's different than working as an advisor for a big company."
