My wife’s father started his own business when he was in his late 20’s, and I always admired what he had done, but I admired the freedom that he had and, I think, the rewarding nature of what he had done. 

Freedom was a big part of driving this decision. The freedom to do whatever we wanted to do on behalf of clients. Really reporting to no one in management hierarchy. 

And really, we feel only beholden to our clients, and our fellow colleagues at the firm. But not having big brother looking over you with a punch clock and your vacation days counted. It’s tough to put a price on that really.

I think going independent has made running the business significantly easier.

One of the most obvious benefits is deciding how to use your time.

Going independent has had a huge effect on my personal life. It’s allowed me to have control over how much work I do and when I do it.

I have that freedom now to do what I think is best for me and for my family.

The fact that I can do my job wherever I need to be has allowed us to travel more.

There’s tons of freedom being independent. With the technology you have access to, you can work from anywhere and still get great results.

Now that we are independent, it has made the job a lot more exciting, a lot more interesting.

One of the beauties of having a registered investment advisor, or RIA, like we are, you can determine what areas of expertise you need to hire and what people on your team you need to bring in. And so hiring professionals that I could select and that I could determine was the level that we needed in these various areas was one of the freeing things of having my own firm versus being told who I needed to work with by a corporation. So it’s a great feeling to see that something that you’ve created with your own hands and worked with a team environment to build is very satisfying.

Going independent has been an enormous benefit to the asset management side of what we do.

The industry is changing so quickly that we wanted to be in control of our own business so we could make good decisions for our clients.

We have the ability to control our own destiny and manage our own business. I can sit down with a person, and I can make a business decision immediately on the spot.

You have the choice of what trading platform you buy, where you get different investment ideas, you know, what kind of research you use. And in fact, you can make all those decisions and you have that choice is something you really don’t have in the wirehouse world because someone’s choosing for you.

Being independent has really allowed us the flexibility to change our firm in ways that we think is best for the client and the best for the future of the firm.

Really, it gives you a rewarding feeling being able to do what you truly think is the right thing to do for them with no one influencing that decision.

Independence means to me that I never have to do anything that isn’t core to my values of taking care of clients, growing the firm in the right direction for today's needs and tomorrow's. We can build a firm that is in the best interest of our clients.

Now we have the complete control to identify and put in place solutions for clients that we know are the right solutions for them.

When it comes to managerial decisions and the flavor of the relationship and the firm that we want to deliver to our clients, we are no longer beholden to a corporate party line.

We're no longer forced to spend time doing things that are beholden to somebody else's agenda.

[GRAPHIC] How Concentus Wealth Advisors feels they are better structured for growth. 

One of the things that we felt we needed to grow was to go independent. We felt like we couldn’t grow the way we wanted to at the firm we were at.

Our ability to keep our existing clients happy but also to attract new clients, in my view, has definitely been enhanced.

It’s just an amazing experience to think in just four short years, what we’ve built. And I think the next four years are going to be even more amazing, and I’m excited to see what year 8 looks like and year 10 and year 12.

I’ve always had this idea that if we do the right thing for people all the time, that even if we don’t get something out of it today, that at some point along the way, in the future, there will be an opportunity that will come back to us.

It’s amazing to think where we are, where we’ve come from…The thing that nags me all the time is I wish we did it sooner.

I was unaware that there was so much to be gained in the eyes of clients and prospects with regards to going independent. Suddenly people were flocking to us who never had before.

I think many of our clients are entrepreneurs, or at least have the entrepreneurial spirit. And I think they, in general, very much appreciated the journey that we were on, knowing that it was for them, not for us.

Independence is the only way to be able to be sure you are doing the best that you can be for your clients in the long run.

It was surprising to me, again, how many people said, “What took you guys so long? Why didn’t you do this sooner?”

Being independent really allowed me to focus on the business. Number one, doing what’s right for the client, but number two, being able to grow Berkeley as a company.

It is a matter of me growing my business the way that I think is the best way to do it.

We’ve been able to win a lot of business. And a lot of it comes because we have more flexibility, we have more flexibility on pricing, we have more flexibility on what services we provide, and what technology we use. And our clients have really responded well, so the business is growing.

We’ve had a lot of positive feedback from potential clients and current clients.

Our business grows when our clients are happy.

Since we’ve gone independent, our firm has experienced the best growth rate in our history.

When you know you’re in a place where you can truly maximize the client experience, where you truly feel you can put them in the best possible situation, and you can execute upon that, and I feel like we have that now in the RIA space.

And all we focus on is just what, which is what you need to, is your clients and what’s going on out there in the world and how does that impact them and their retirement plans and their college education planning for their kids. It’s great. We don’t have all the other noise associated with it.

Gosh, it makes all the difference in the world when you don’t have to worry about your environment or what crisis you’re dealing with. You can focus 100 percent on the client.

Yeah, I think helping people feels good. You know, giving back…, I mean, it’s a good thing.
